Acupressure May Offer Natural Migraine Relief, Studies Suggest

New research suggests that acupressure, a traditional Chinese medicine technique, may offer relief from migraine symptoms and reduce side effects compared to traditional treatments. Both acupressure and acupuncture have shown promise in alleviating migraine-related nausea and fatigue, with specific pressure points on various parts of the body believed to be particularly effective.

Several pressure points have been identified as potentially helpful for migraine sufferers. On the hand, the union valley point (LI4) between the thumb and index finger is considered particularly effective for acute symptom relief. Gentle massage of this point may help alleviate migraine pain. Other hand points include the third eye (GV24.5) on the forehead and the drilling bamboo (BL2) on the foot. The gates of consciousness (GB20) at the base of the skull and the shoulder well (GB21) on the shoulder blade are also commonly used.

For the feet, the great surge (LV3) and moving point (LV2) on the big toe, and above tears (GB41) on the top of the foot have shown promise. On the ear, the ear gate (SJ21), daith, and ear apex (HN6) may provide relief. However, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before trying these techniques, especially for pregnant individuals or those with bleeding disorders or pacemakers.

While studies suggest that acupressure and acupuncture can help with migraine symptoms, more high-quality research is needed to confirm their effectiveness. Nevertheless, these techniques may offer a natural, low-risk alternative for managing migraine episodes. Always consult a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.
