Alibaba teams up with Beijing United Family Hospital to implement AI in cancer detection and care strategies
In a significant move towards advancing healthcare, Alibaba Group Holding's research arm, Damo Academy, and Beijing United Family Hospital (BJU) have joined forces to apply AI technology in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and chronic diseases.
The collaboration, set to take place in Hangzhou, focuses on Damo Academy's medical AI screening system called "One Sweep Multi-Check". This innovative system is designed to detect multiple diseases, including various cancers, through a single flat computed tomography (CT) scan. By enhancing speed, precision, and cost-effectiveness, it promises to revolutionise cancer detection.
The partnership aims to provide more efficient, reliable, and people-centered healthcare, a move that is particularly relevant given the projected increase in global cancer cases—expected to exceed 35 million by 2050, according to WHO estimates.
Beyond cancer detection, the collaboration also targets the diagnosis of chronic diseases like osteoporosis and severe fatty liver disease. This focus addresses the growing healthcare challenges posed by China’s ageing population, emphasising multi-disease screening to support comprehensive health management for older adults.
BJU president Pan Zhongying expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, marking a significant step forward in integrating advanced AI technology into clinical practice to improve early cancer and chronic disease screening. This collaboration potentially transforms healthcare delivery for an ageing population, making it faster, more accurate, and cost-effective.
The partnership also bolsters the credentials of Alibaba's AI-powered cancer detection tools, highlighting their potential to revolutionise the healthcare industry.
