A Chaotic Hearing for an Ohio Father

After fatally hitting a deputy with his car, an Ohio father pictured below was denied bond during a tumultuous court hearing.

The judge ordered Rodney L. Hinton to be remanded without bond, following accusations of aggravated murder in connection with the death of Hamilton County Special Deputy Larry Henderson. Hinton pleaded not guilty.

Before pleading, a chaotic scene unfolded in the courtroom's gallery when Hinton's brother began shouting, "That's my brother, that's my brother." Over 50 police officers and at least three dozen family members and protesters filled the gallery.

Deputies promptly escorted Hinton out of the room. Judge Tyrone Yates attempted to calm the situation, stating, "Everybody, be calm. We're going to get through this."

Authorities suspect Hinton intentionally hit Henderson, a retired deputy working that day, on Friday afternoon as he directed traffic near the University of Cincinnati during graduation. Henderson was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey described Henderson as "so well-liked and so well-known." In a Friday press conference, McGuffey expressed deep sadness over the incident.

Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge revealed that there was a clear connection between the collision and the fatal police shooting of Hinton's 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, the previous day.

Ryan Hinton was killed by a Cincinnati police officer who responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at an apartment complex. Theetge stated that four individuals in the alleged stolen car ran in different directions when approached by police, with two officers pursuing the teen and another person.

Theetge confirmed that the teen was armed and that an officer fired at least four times. Preliminary information suggests that the 18-year-old was hit by two bullets, one in the chest and one in the arm.

Derived from extensive video evidence, Cincinnati police officer Carl Beebe claimed that Rodney Hinton had viewed the body camera footage of his son's shooting moments before the collision. A released police video shows an officer exiting his vehicle and pointing his gun at the teen, who appeared to be running away.

Authorities reported that the gun was recovered at the scene. Theetge supported the officer's actions, stating that they often must make "split-second decisions to protect others and themselves when faced with immediate threats." She added that the officer who shot Ryan Hinton had stated that the teen pointed his gun at him.

The officer's identity has not been revealed. Family members expressed concerns about Hinton's emotional state and driving abilities, as he returned to pick up his vehicle from the parking lot after being driven away from the station due to these concerns.

Hinton's actions leading to the accident are under scrutiny, as he appeared to have intentionally sped through the intersection where Henderson was standing, hitting the deputy and a utility pole.
