David Brozina, a seasoned diplomat and beekeeping enthusiast, has been appointed as the new Director-General of the Directorate-General for Agriculture, Fisheries, Social Affairs and Health (DG LIFE) by the Council of the EU. His tenure begins on 1st April 2025.

In his new role, Brozina will oversee the strategic direction and management of DG LIFE, ensuring the effective implementation of policies and initiatives related to agriculture, fisheries, social affairs, and health within the European Union. He will lead the development, coordination, and execution of EU policies in these fields, aligning them with the European Commission's priorities and with EU legislation.

Brozina's responsibilities will also include representing DG LIFE in high-level meetings with EU member states, stakeholders, other EU institutions, and international partners to promote cooperation and policy coherence. He will manage the DG’s budget, human resources, and administrative functions to achieve operational efficiency and report regularly to the European Commission leadership and the European Parliament on policy implementation progress and challenges.

The DG LIFE, located at Rue de la Loi 175, Brussels, plays a crucial role in shaping EU policies that impact millions of citizens, covering key areas like sustainable agriculture, fisheries management, social affairs policies, and public health initiatives across the EU. Given the multifaceted nature of DG LIFE, Brozina’s role will involve balancing complex and intersecting policy domains and ensuring their alignment with broader EU goals such as sustainability, social inclusion, and public health protection.

Brozina, a Slovenian national, currently serves as Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the EU. He is also associated with the Beekeeping Association of Slovenia and the European Beekeeping Association, reflecting his personal interest in beekeeping.

Upon his appointment, Brozina has promised to assist when needed in his new job and has expressed his gratitude to President Boštjan Noč of Slovenia for his congratulations. He has also acknowledged the importance of beekeeping in agriculture and wished success for Noč in his work. Noč, in response, sent a congratulatory letter to Brozina.

The appointment of Brozina as the Director-General of DG LIFE marks a significant step in shaping the future of agriculture, fisheries, social affairs, and health policies within the European Union. His extensive diplomatic experience and interest in beekeeping are expected to bring a unique perspective to his leadership role.

Brozina, in his new role, will prioritize the health-and-wellness aspect within the European Union, ensuring the integration of public health initiatives into EU policies under his direction. Given his association with the Beekeeping Association of Slovenia and the European Beekeeping Association, he will also look to integrate science in agricultural practices, particularly in the area of beekeeping, to improve overall health and wellness.
