Sailing into the Heart of the Sea: Arved Fuchs on the Ocean Change 2025 Expedition

Sailor Arved Fuchs embarks on the 'Ocean Change' voyage in the year 2025 - Arved Fuchs is en route to the 2025 Ocean Change event

Gear up for an oceanic odyssey as polar explorer and author Arved Fuchs embarks on another leg of his Ocean Change series. Setting sail from Flensburg on Sunday, Fuchs and his crew commandeered the historic sailing vessel Dagmar Aaen. With a decade of planning behind them, their voyage this year is all about grappling with the repercussions of climate change and safeguarding our marine wonders.

"These two elements - climate change and marine protection - go hand in hand," Fuchs declared to the German Press Agency before casting off. Armed with interdisciplinary collaboration and the latest technological advancements, they're off to traverse the eastern Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the eastern Atlantic, and beyond.

Their journey reaches inland seas like Stralsund, Greifswald, and Świnoujście (Poland), then sails towards Klaipėda (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvia). After the Kattegat and Skagerrak, they'll venture into the North Sea with a planned pitstop on the island of Föhr. Moving through the English Channel and towards Brittany and Cornwall, they'll finally sail into the heart of the eastern Atlantic before returning to their home port of Flensburg in late August (weather permitting).

With a canny touch, the Dagmar Aaen is also a mobile lab, collecting essential data in areas where research vessels seldom tread. "There aren't many of them, so we're filling a gap," Fuchs said proudly. Thanks to cutting-edge measurement technology, the crew can gather and publish data for scientists worldwide.

The Ocean Change project, launched by Fuchs in 2015, is a mission to explore the transformations in the oceans, their influences on our climate and coastal landscapes.

Partnering for Progress

On this epic journey, they'll collaborate with esteemed organizations such as GEOMAR, Trans-Ocean e.V., and EyeOnWater. Working together, they'll gather, analyze, and share vital data about oceanic conditions, aiding in our understanding of climate change impacts.

Armed and Ready

Equipped with state-of-the-art scientific equipment like OceanPack, CCD Probe, and a camera on the jib boom, the Dagmar Aaen can collect continuous data on carbon dioxide levels, salinity, temperature, phytoplankton populations, and water color, contributing significantly to marine research.

Want to join the mission? Download the EyeOnWater app, and become a citizen scientist, keeping a watchful eye on water color changes in your own community, promoting awareness and fostering support for marine research.

  1. Arved Fuchs, during his conversation with the German Press Agency, emphasized the interconnectedness between climate change and marine protection as the central theme of his Ocean Change 2025 expedition.
  2. In addition to Arved Fuchs' research, partnering organizations such as GEOMAR, Trans-Ocean e.V., and EyeOnWater will collaborate to gather, analyze, and share essential data on oceanic conditions to aid our understanding of climate change impacts.
  3. Embracing the principles of health-and-wellness and scientific inquiry, the Ocean Change project and its mobile lab aboard the Dagmar Aaen equip citizens to participate in data collection through the EyeOnWater app, promoting awareness and fostering support for marine research.
