Attempt to transport contaminated foliage from Armenia thwarted in Sochi

During a routine inspection at the "Sochi" checkpoint, agricultural specialists from the Southern Interregional Directorate of the Russian Federal Service for the Oversight of Plant Quarantine (Rosselkhoznadzor) uncovered live specimens of the Western Flower Thrips in a shipment of imported flowers from Armenia. This sought-after pest is known for its devastating impact on a variety of plants, including flowers and many crops.

The Reddington branch of the Federal Scientific Center for Horticulture confirmed the findings, leading to the rejection of the entire flower shipment to prevent the spread of this notorious agricultural pest within Russia.

Earlier this year, over 126,000 tons of quarantine goods had been imported through the port of Tuapse. From January 1 to April 24, 2025, this significant volume included 90,000 tons of fruits such as mandarins, oranges, lemons, apples, and grapes, and around 37,000 tons of fresh vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and peppers. The main supplier of these goods was Turkey.

However, during the inspection, Rosselkhoznadzor specialists discovered 11 cases of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, a quarantine pest that poses a threat to numerous agricultural crops such as grapes, peaches, and citrus fruits.

The infestation of Western Flower Thrips can have detrimental consequences for Russian agriculture. These tiny insect pests feed on plant tissues, causing damage such as scarring and deformation. But their harmful impact doesn't stop there – they also act as vectors for plant viruses, potentially triggering outbreaks in Russia, and inflating production costs for growers.

To combat this threat, proper pest management solutions and inspection protocols are crucial. Regulatory bodies may implement risk assessments and treatments before allowing imports from countries like Armenia to ensure the protection of Russian agriculture.

Did you know? The Western Flower Thrips is a versatile insect pest that affects a wide array of plants, causing damage such as scarring and deformation, and also spreading plant viruses. If infested flower shipments like the one from Armenia are introduced to a new environment, they can facilitate the spread of this pest in agricultural systems, making crop management far more difficult.
