Sizzling Summer Ahead: Health Minister Proposes Cooling Off on Alcohol and Grilling Amid Heatwave

Avoid consuming alcohol and grilling foods during hot weather, as suggested by Nina Warken.

Germany's heatwave is fast approaching as summer temperatures spike. Federal Health Minister Nina Warken has rolled out the second nationwide heat protection plan, focusing primarily on recreational sports. Athletes and enthusiasts need to reconsider certain habits, warned the minister.

Minister Warken’s plan, developed in collaboration with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), aims to educate citizens about the health hazards posed by excessive heat. The plan concentrates on safeguarding vulnerable groups such as the elderly, sick individuals, pregnant women, young children, and athletes from the perils of punishing heatwaves.

28.8 Million Sports Enthusiasts in Germany

The plan takes on recreational sports with fervor. DOSB-associated clubs boast around 28.8 million members. In her introduction, Minister Warken emphasized the importance of caution as temperatures soar. Distilled over 13 pages, the heat protection plan puts forth numerous tips and recommendations:

  • Suspension and cancellation criteria for competitions
  • Provision of water coolers or watering cans filled with cold water
  • Complimentary sunscreen and sunglasses for children
  • Closure of uncovered sports facilities during hot weather
  • Exclusion of sick athletes from competitions
  • Extended summer breaks and reduced winter breaks
  • Avoidance of alcoholic beverages, sugary, caffeinated, and taurine-laden drinks
  • Curtailment of open fire or grill catering

Pharmacies, in turn, have been suggested to install water dispensers, expand delivery services in warmer weather, engage with at-risk individuals, and emphasize the potential dangers of heat. They should also opt for additional blinds, air conditioning, or ventilation systems.

2,000 Deaths Annually Due to Heat

Pharmaceutical practices should, among other things, create a list of high-risk individuals, scrutinize their medication plans, and schedule consultations early in the morning or late in the evening. The first nationwide heat protection plan was introduced in 2023 under Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach. Compared to France, which unveiled its plan as early as 2004, the initiative is relatively recent in Germany. On average, several thousand Germans succumb each year to the effects of high temperatures.

As general strategies for countering the harmful effects of heat, staying hydrated, resting during the hottest hours of the day, and using cooling instruments like fans or air conditioning are recommended. For athletes, special considerations include adjusting training schedules, ensuring proper hydration, using cooling towels and packs, and wearing lightweight clothing.

Bonus Insights:

  1. The Association of German Engineers (VDI) has established new standards for heat action planning, incorporating advanced tools like decision matrices based on heat warning systems. These guidelines help municipalities and public authorities prepare for heatwaves and safeguard public health[1].
  2. City-specific strategies, such as the Ready4Heat project, focus on short-, medium-, and long-term measures to combat sudden heatwaves. These plans involve input from various stakeholders and comprehensive climate analysis for improved heat wave resilience[5].
  3. In general, minimizing heat-related risks requires staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat periods, and employing cooling techniques such as fans or air conditioning. For athletes, these might also encompass schedule adjustments and ensuring appropriate hydration. Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing promotes better ventilation and improved reflection of sunlight [2][3].
  4. As part of the community policy, the heat protection plan in Germany includes a ban on open fire or grill catering to reduce heat-related risks.
  5. The policy also encourages athletes and sports enthusiasts to avoid alcoholic beverages, sugary, caffeinated, and taurine-laden drinks for better health-and-wellness and mental-health during hot weather.
  6. In the field of science, the Association of German Engineers (VDI) has developed advanced guidelines for heat action planning, using decision matrices based on heat warning systems to help cities prepare for heatwaves and improve public health.
