Meat Safety Check on Popular Retail Chain's Products
Avoiding Intestinal Contamination in May Meats: Experts Discover Worm-like Parasites in Common Ham Varieties
As the May holidays approach, reporters scrutinized the quality of grilled meat goods available at prominent retail chains. Here's what we discovered!
Diverse samples were acquired from various hypermarkets and subjected to examination in an accredited lab of the National Center for Food Safety and Quality of Meat and Meat Products.
Analyzed Meat Products
For the study, we examined the following meat products representing various producers and brands:
- "Fille property"
- "Miratorg-Kursk"
- "Miratorg-Bryansk"
- "O'KEY" network
- "IndiLait"
- Products from "Magnolia" and "Verney" retail chains
Regrettably, data about the results for the last three companies remains unavailable at present.
Examination Results
Our investigation revealed the following issues:
- "Miratorg" samples: Two samples tested positive for E. coli, a bacterium that forms part of the intestinal microflora of animals but could find its way into the product during improper cutting practices.
- Dr. Andrei Yakushev, a renowned gastroenterologist, warned that E. coli can induce symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. In vulnerable individuals, such as children or those with weakened immunity, the infection might result in severe complications.
- Presence of Microorganisms in Other Samples: Four samples were found harboring microorganisms that contaminated the product during the production process. The quality and safety of the meat products are measured using the KMAFPANM indicator, which shows the level of these microorganisms.
The check indicated that not all meat products offering themselves on the shelves of popular chains abide by high safety standards, the source asserted.
[, Rosselkhoznadzor (Agricultural Supervision Agency), and local Russian-language press outlets, like Kommersant, RBC, or Vedomosti. Additionally, you can seek lab reports from accredited institutions, such as FGBU "VNIIGE" or FGBU "TsNIL".
If you suspect a specific product is contaminated, provide its exact name, batch number, or inspection date for targeted investigation. You may also cross-reference with recalls or alerts from the retail chains' websites, such as O'KEY's product recall section.
Always ensure meat is thoroughly cooked, and consider purchasing products with visible food safety certifications, like EAC or GOST-R marks. For urgent concerns, contact consumer protection agencies directly.
- The examination of meat products revealed that two samples from Miratorg, a meat producer, tested positive for E. coli, a bacterium that can induce symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration, especially in children or those with weakened immunity.
- Additionally, four samples from different producers were found harboring microorganisms that contaminated the product during the production process, as indicated by the KMAFPANM indicator.
- The study conducted on various meat products in hypermarkets showed that Miratorg samples, specifically from Kursk, were among those with issues related to food safety.
- The results of our study, while revealing issues with some of the meat products, underscored the importance of maintaining high health-and-wellness standards in the food-and-drink industry, particularly in the lifestyle segment focused on healthier choices.
- The unavailability of data about the results for the last three companies, including O'KEY network, IndiLait, Mangolia, and Verney retail chains, leaves their meat products' safety and quality unverified as of now.
