Balanced Run: The "Let's Quit" community launches a marathon without relying on nicotine

Let's hop on over to the "Let's Quit" community on Telegram and VKontakte, two platforms where people are taking a stand against electronic cigarettes, vapes, and other nicotine devices. This badass crew is part of the national project "Healthy Longevity."

With over 64,000 members, this community is a hub for those ready to cut the cord on nicotine addiction. You'll find stories from quitters, helpful advice, and practical tips. But the most important part? Support and unity for those ready to break free from this harmful rut.

As Mariné Gambaryan, head of the Tobacco Control Center at the National Medical Research Center of Therapy and Preventive Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, points out, "Electronic nicotine-containing and non-nicotine devices are equally harmful to the heart, blood vessels, respiratory system, and DNA as traditional cigarettes. In some cases, they can even cause acute conditions, including vascular damage and death."

To encourage more people to kick the habit, a social awareness campaign launched in early June is raising eyebrows about the dangers of vapes and similar devices. The national project "Healthy Longevity" is all about combatting nicotine addiction and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The campaign's materials help people make the decision to ditch their dependence. Coughing from vaping? Think e-cigarettes aren't harmful because they're just "fruit-flavored"? Time to dump that nonsense!

The "Let's Quit" community hosts marathons twice a year to help quitters take their first step. The new summer marathon, appropriately named "Wheel of Balance," aims to help people quit smoking by focusing on five key areas of life:

  1. Motivation - why quit?
  2. Changing perceptions - transforming our thinking about smoking.
  3. Triggers - Learning to Cope with Provoking Situations.
  4. Healthy Habits - What to Replace Cigarettes With?
  5. Maintaining Results - How Not to Relapse?

Each week, participants fill out one section. After five weeks, the wheel will be complete, allowing progress to be evaluated. If all tasks are completed, all areas will be balanced, making it easier to quit smoking.

At the end, participants will score a full set of original "Let's Quit" stickers, and randomly selected winners will win a one-year subscription to VK Music.

As Alexei Reshetun, assistant professor at the Department of Human Anatomy of the Institute of Anatomy and Morphology named after Academician Yu.M. Lopuhin of the Pirogov University, points out, "E-cigarettes do not produce smoke. Instead, an aerosol is created through the evaporation of a special liquid, containing ultra-microscopic particles that penetrate all parts of the lungs, including the less ventilated areas - the back and lower segments, where regular smoke rarely reaches. The aerosol spreads throughout the lung tissue. The liquid used in e-cigarettes contains many chemical substances, primarily nicotine. Even in nicotine-free mixtures, this poison can be present in trace amounts. Moreover, it's synthetic nicotine, which is often more aggressive."

Remember, if you're ready to leave dependence behind, you can visit health centers and receive specialists' help. Their mission aligns with the goals of the "National Project 'Long and Active Life.'" Visit

While e-cigarettes may not produce smoke, they're far from harmless. They can wreak havoc on your respiratory system, cardiovascular health, and even cause addictions—all risks associated with traditional tobacco products. And don't forget about nicotine's nasty effects on your nervous system, particularly in young users. So, whether it's synthetic or traditional, nicotine is a menace, plain and simple.
