Alcohol consumption proved fatal for a 53-year-old man in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern last Father's Day. The incident occurred on Barniner See in Crivitz, Ludwigslust-Parchim district, when the man's canoe capsized.

The police received an emergency call around 2:30 PM about a capsized canoe with two occupants. Unfortunately, the 53-year-old local man was found lifeless by rescue services. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the boat operator, a 55-year-old man, had a blood alcohol level of 1.25 percent.

Meanwhile, a different incident occurred in Greifswald, where two canoes and a motorboat capsized at the harbor entrance. The group, including six individuals, was returning from a paddling tour in Danish Wieck when their boats capsized. All six people went overboard, but they were rescued within 30 minutes by the "Hanne Marie" crew and given medical attention on shore.

The motorboat driver, a 39-year-old man, was heavily intoxicated, registering 1.7 percent on a breathalyzer test. The authorities have filed a criminal complaint against him.

Operating a canoe under the influence of alcohol is subject to legal restrictions and safety risks, similar to those for small boats on Mecklenburg-Vorpommern waterways. Local police and water authorities can intervene if reckless or dangerous behavior is observed, and most states enforce similar alcohol limits on their lakes as on roads. It is crucial to check local regulations before canoeing to ensure compliance and safety.
