Boil Water Advisory Issued for Greifswald Due to Microbial Contamination
A boil water advisory has been issued for Greifswald, excluding the island of Riems, due to microbial contamination detected in the drinking water. The county health department and Stadtwerke Greifswald are working together to resolve the issue.
On Monday, September 8, 2025, extensive water samples were taken from the Groß Schönwalde waterworks, which revealed the presence of enterococci. This has led to a slight exceedance of limit values at a sampling point. While the cause of the contamination is still under investigation, ongoing water line renovations in Schönwalde are being looked into as a possible factor. The health department expects stomach upset as a potential health effect, but no other risks are anticipated. It's important to note that there is currently no known connection to the recent EHEC incident.
Citizens are advised to boil their water before consumption until further notice. The Stadtwerke Greifswald will continue to inform the public about the situation as more information becomes available. The health department and Stadtwerke Greifswald remain in constant exchange to ensure the safety of the water supply.
