Little Valya Korolyov is grappling with more than just growing up. A vicious attack by a pair of neighboring huskies left the 9-year-old with deep wounds on his legs and a gruesome bite on his face. The brutal encounter occurred when he was on his way to his dad's place in a picturesque mountain village in Sochi.
In late February, Valya was quickly whisked off to the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital. Medical professionals successfully brought him out of an induced coma, got him back on his feet, and performed three skin graft operations. But this is merely the beginning of a long and arduous journey towards restoring his appearance. Years of treatment lie ahead.
A few weeks ago, Valya faced another challenge. On the only part of his face untouched by the dogs, a peculiar device was installed – an expander. This subdermal balloon, now as big as an adult's fist, is filled with air to stretch the elastic skin on his forehead. This excess skin will later be utilized to reconstruct his nose and cheeks.
Originally, everything seemed to go smoothly, but recently, the boy's eyes became excessively swollen. Concerned, his parents had to rush him to get tested to determine the cause. Accoding to Valya's father, the subdermal balloon is the culprit behind the inflammation. To stave off complications, doctors have given Valya IV drips, which need to be administered every three hours.
"We've been prescribed antibiotics," said Valentin Korolyov Sr., Valya's father. "We need to do the IV drip; otherwise, in two weeks, the plastic surgery should start, and we don't want any inflammatory processes."
In the first stage of the plastic surgery, surgeons will work on Valya's nose. They plan to shape it from the extra skin on his forehead and harvest cartilage from his ribs. Following that, they will begin shaping his upper lip, part of which will be grown in a lab.
