In the ongoing battle against COVID-19, Canada continues to navigate the landscape of new cases and variants. Here are the latest developments:

As of the latest update from the Public Health and Wellness Agency of Canada (PHAC), the total number of deaths due to the pandemic stands at 50,135, with an additional 222 reported in the latest update. Quebec has recorded the highest number of deaths with 17,865, followed by Ontario with 15,786.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, has expressed minimal concern over new cases of Omicron sub-variants circulating in Canada. While the XBB sub-variants are expected to increase, it is not known whether they will become the dominant lineage. The percent of cases caused by the XBB.1.5 sub-variant is predicted to rise to 7% of the total amount this month, up from a 2.5% frequency between December 25 and January 2.

In a precautionary measure, the National Advisory Committee on Booster Shots (NACI) has recommended bivalent mRNA vaccines as the preferred booster vaccines for individuals aged 5 and over. The booster shots are particularly important for individuals who have been over 6 months since their last dosage or who have been infected with Covid-19.

The preferred mRNA vaccines for COVID-19 boosters in Canada are the updated bivalent Moderna SpikeVax KP.2 and Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty KP.2. These have been authorized by Health Canada and are designed to protect against currently circulating COVID-19 strains. Vaccination remains available for individuals aged 6 months and older, although vaccine eligibility for those aged 6 months to 11 years expired as of June 17, 2025.

The regular positivity rate is currently at 13.4%. PHAC has urged Canadians to continue getting vaccinated as a "vital health action" and to stay up-to-date on their Covid-19 vaccinations.

As of mid-2025, Canadian health authorities recommend COVID-19 booster doses primarily for adults aged 65 years or older, with an additional booster dose advised at least 3 months after the previous mRNA vaccine dose.

These recommendations reflect the most recent guidance from provincial and federal Canadian health authorities. For the latest updates, it is advised to consult official health agency websites.

Health and wellness are prioritized as scientists closely monitor new medical-conditions like the Omicron sub-variants in Canada. To stay protected, the National Advisory Committee on Booster Shots (NACI) recommends bivalent mRNA vaccines as an essential measure, especially for those who have been at least 6 months since their last dosage or have been infected with Covid-19. Additionally, it's crucial for Canadians to stay up-to-date on their Covid-19 vaccinations as part of a vital health action, as advised by public health authorities.
