CAR-T Cell Therapy Coming to Türkiye: Hope for Leukemia Patients

A groundbreaking development in cancer treatment is set to reach Turkey. A hospital run by the Foundation for Children with Leukemia (LÖSEV) is poised to introduce CAR-T cell therapy, a cutting-edge treatment for leukemia and other blood cancers. This therapy, which has shown promising results abroad, is considered a last resort for patients who do not respond to conventional treatments like chemotherapy or bone marrow transplants. In Spain, seven end-stage leukemia patients have responded positively to CAR-T therapy. The introduction of CAR-T therapy in Turkey could pave the way for further advancements. Experts believe it may contribute to the development of a cancer vaccine, bolstering both prevention and treatment efforts. This is particularly significant in Turkey, where leukemias are the most common cancers in children, affecting approximately 1,500 youngsters annually. CAR-T therapy works by reprogramming a patient's own immune cells. These cells are then trained to recognize and attack cancer cells, offering a potentially powerful weapon in the fight against these diseases. This breakthrough treatment offers hope to patients who have not responded to conventional treatments. Its introduction may also contribute to the development of a cancer vaccine, benefiting both prevention and treatment efforts in the country.
