In a shocking turn of events, a 38-year-old woman, dubbed the mother, and her 41-year-old spouse, the stepfather, have been apprehended by the Camden Police and Prosecutor's Office based in New Jersey.

The mother had taken her underage daughter out of school in the 6th grade, under the pretext of homeschooling. However, the gruesome reality was far from educational.

"Soon after, the girl was confined to a prison-like kennel for nearly a year," stressed Prosecutor Grace MacAulay, recounting the victim's harrowing tale. Stuck amidst dogs, chinchillas, and other animals, the girl suffered physical torture with a belt and was repeatedly sexually abused by her stepfather.

Living in the dog cage for a year was only the beginning. She was later chained in a bathroom. On occasions, she was pushed into an empty room, equipped with nothing more than a bucket for a lavatory. During visits from relatives, she was momentarily released but was promptly secured back in her cell once they left.

According to MacAulay, the room was outfitted with an alarm system intended to warn the couple of any attempted escapes. However, last week, the young woman miraculously broke free, receiving aid from a neighbor. Two days later, the police were notified, leading to the arrest of the couple. Another thirteen-year-old girl, withdrawn from school for the same supposed reason, was discovered to be held captive within the household.

The accused pair are now facing charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, assault, and criminal conspiracy. The stepfather, a train conductor, is additionally charged with sexual assault.
