Collaborative Agreement reached between Malabar Group and WHO India to execute 'Nurturing Beginnings' Initiative
Malabar Group, a leading diversified Indian business conglomerate, has announced the launch of a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative called Nurturing Beginnings. This project, which aims to improve the nutrition and overall well-being of mothers and children from disadvantaged urban communities, was unveiled at Malabar Group's Headquarters in Kuttikkatoor, Kozhikode.
The Nurturing Beginnings initiative builds on Malabar Group's flagship Hunger Free World program, which currently provides free nutritious meals to 60,000 people daily in India and 10,000 students in three schools in Zambia. The project will be implemented through the Malabar Charitable Trust, an arm of the conglomerate that has been allocating 5 percent of its profits towards CSR initiatives since 1993.
In a significant development, Malabar Group has joined forces with the World Health Organization (WHO) India for the successful implementation of the Nurturing Beginnings project. An MoU for the project was signed at Malabar Group's Headquarters, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged.
Dr. Roderico H. Ofrin, WHO Representative to India, congratulated Malabar Group for initiating the project and expressed confidence in its success. He emphasised the importance of such initiatives, particularly considering that global studies highlight that the first 1,000 days from conception until the child's early growth years are critical for physical, mental, and intellectual development.
The Nurturing Beginnings project will provide free nutritious food to mothers and children, along with medical services that support both physical and mental health. This comprehensive approach is designed to ensure the holistic development of the beneficiaries.
M.P. Ahammad, Chairman of Malabar Group, expressed gratitude to WHO for its support and cooperation in the Nurturing Beginnings project. He also highlighted Malabar Group's long-standing commitment to social causes, citing examples such as the Hunger Free World project, the support provided to destitute mothers through 'Grandma Home', and the establishment of more than 700 micro-learning centers across India to support street children and school dropouts.
In addition, Malabar Group has awarded over 1,15,000 scholarships to girl students since launching its scholarship program in 2007. This year, Malabar Charitable Trust is set to distribute 33,000 scholarships to promote the education of underprivileged girls.
The project will initially be rolled out in urban communities in Delhi, with plans to expand across other states. Malabar Group aims to bring back nearly 30,000 children to school through this initiative and support the mental and intellectual development of children.
Dr. P. Muhammad Asheel, National Professional Officer of WHO, has expressed support for the Nurturing Beginnings project. His statement underscores the importance of collective efforts in addressing the challenges faced by disadvantaged communities and promoting sustainable development.
As Malabar Group continues to grow and expand its business operations, its commitment to social responsibility remains steadfast. The launch of the Nurturing Beginnings project is a testament to this commitment and a step towards a hunger-free world and a healthier, more educated future for all.
