Dismissed Charges for Structural Engineer Over Decade-Old Bridge Collapse
Structural collapse of bridge - Charges against engineer dropped - Collapse of Bridge Results in Suspension of Proceedings against Stat Authority
Looking back at the catastrophic collapse of an autobahn bridge near Schweinfurt nine years ago, the accused structural engineer has offloaded the burden onto his shoulders. The 53-year-old was slapped with a 5,000 euro fine to be donated to Schweinfurt's Bavarian Red Cross.
The verdict might not be the last word, as the decision is still pending final approval. Despite the public prosecutor's insistence on his culpability, the chamber deemed the fault to be minor. Both parties agreed to drop the proceedings on the opening day of the trial.
The 53-year-old accepted his shortcomings in the static calculation of the bridge's support structure, which the court-appointed expert attributed as the primary cause of the disaster. The accident left one worker dead and 14 injured when the support structure caved in while 1,500 tons of concrete were being poured on the Schraudenbach Valley Bridge in Werneck, Bavaria, in 2016.
In May 2023, two review engineers (ages 51 and 61) received suspended sentences for their role in the calamity. A third individual was acquitted. The 61-year-old's appeal was dismissed by the Federal Court of Justice as baseless, but the 51-year-old's case is under review due to a procedural oversight.
Expert analysis revealed a multitude of errors within the calculations, including a glaring omission of the load-bearing capacity analysis. The accused structural engineer also failed to provide evidence for the stability of the arches, essential components for transmitting the load to the support structure, as per the expert’s statement.
The experts in charge of inspecting the statics were accused of negligence or passivity towards the project in the indictment, allowing a substandard scaffolding to hold the concrete load, leading to the tragic incident.
