Dutch Presenter Sylvie Meis Reflects on Her Breast Cancer Journey

Approximately 1-minute read

Sylvie Meis, a renowned Dutch model and television presenter, recently shared her experiences in the "Bild" podcast "May Way." Sixtteen years ago, she discovered a lump in her breast, an event she compares to an earthquake. In 2009, she was diagnose with breast cancer.

Meis continues, "I think about the cancer every day. I was terrified." Looking back, however, she feels gratitude "for being allowed to survive it. Despite the intensity, I'm grateful it made me the woman I am today." Meis publicly announced her breast cancer diagnosis in June 2009, undergoing surgery to remove the tumor and subsequent chemotherapy, which caused her hair to fall out.

Following her treatment, Meis participated in the RTL dance show "Let's Dance" in 2010, marking one of the most significant moments in her TV career. She removed her wig on the show for the first time, revealing her short hair to the public. She co-hosted the show with Daniel Hartwich from 2011 to 2017.

Before gaining prominence in Germany, Meis was known primarily as the wife of former soccer player, Rafael van der Vaart. They married in 2005 and had a son, Damian, in May 2006. The couple divorced in 2013 but are now friends again, according to Meis.

Individuals who have battled breast cancer often face profound personal and professional challenges. These can include emotional and physical recovery, changes in career priorites, and increased advocacy for cancer awareness and support. Public figures like Meis can use their platforms to raise awareness, support survivors, and encourage early detection efforts.

I'm not going to be able to do this, I thought, as I contemplated my medical-conditions, specifically breast-cancer. science and health-and-wellness were always important to me, but never more so than during this trying time. My diagnosis brought with it a wave of fear, but it also sparked a newfound appreciation for mental-health and women's-health. I'm grateful for every day that I've been given, and I plan to use my platform to raise awareness and encourage early detection, not just for breast-cancer, but for all medical-conditions that affect our health-and-wellness.
