Investment Push: Kita, Health, Housing: Alliance Urges Billions for NRW

Demand for Billions in Funding: Alliance Advocates for Improved Healthcare, Housing in North Rhine-Westphalia - Demand for massive funding in healthcare, accommodation, and pollution control: Coalition urges billions for North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)

Get ready for a big push! A dynamic action alliance is pushing for a whopping 156 billion euros to be invested into North Rhine-Westphalia's infrastructure over the next decade. Düsseldorf played host to their bold statement, calling for urgent action in various sectors: from kid-friendly spaces (Kitas) and schools, through healthcare and affordable housing, to digitalization and eco-friendly projects.

"This isn't just about shiny new buildings; it's about equality and inclusion for all in our society," the statement declared. "The state of North Rhine-Westphalia should invest more to secure a bright future." The statement has garnered support from welfare and social affairs associations, church groups, municipalities, and the United Services Union (Verdi).

The neglect of public infrastructure isn't cool

"Germany lags behind other EU countries in terms of public infrastructure investment - North Rhine-Westphalia's no exception," complained Verdi's state chairwoman, Gabriele Schmidt. "Whether education, social work, public transport or healthcare, the shortfall in funds and manpower is a daily struggle." Communities, social carriers, and the populace feel the pinch every day.

"Neglecting vital infrastructure breeds frustration and gives extremist parties a foothold," cautioned the unionist. "It's high time for a change and long-term strategies for sustainable financing of municipalities and social services."

The alliance seeks relief for municipalities from unsustainable debt, reforms to the debt brake, and a fairer tax rate. To cover the total demand, higher tax revenues and a more equitable tax system are essential, according to the statement. The funds from the federal infrastructure package should largely benefit NRW and municipalities.

The housing crunch

The investment gaps are widespread across various societal sectors. For instance, affordable housing: "25,000 new rent-controlled apartments are needed annually, the demand's growing," the alliance declared. "Housing associations aren't meeting this need, so the state needs a state housing company and 35 billion euros in investments."

Christian Woltering, board member of the Paritätischer NRW, urged: "Now's the time for bold political action to address the decades of underfunding we've seen.” Also, Lisa-Kristin Kapteinat, state chairwoman of the German Red Cross, demanded: "Nobody should be left behind - not the sick child, not the single mother, not the elderly neighbor. So, let's invest massively in social infrastructure."
