Diabetes Patients Embrace Smartwatches for Real-Time Glucose Monitoring

People with diabetes are increasingly turning to smartwatches for real-time glucose monitoring, thanks to advancements in continuous glucose monitor (CGM) technology. Medtronic's Guardian Connect CGM offers push notifications on compatible smartwatches, while Garmin watches display real-time data from Dexcom. Dexcom's upcoming G7 model promises direct-to-watch connectivity by the end of 2022.

Medtronic's Guardian Connect CGM allows users to view alerts and status updates on compatible smartwatches, although real-time data display is not available. Garmin watches, compatible with Dexcom, offer real-time glucose levels, trend arrows, and a 3-hour history CGM line, but lack their own alerts or alarms. Dexcom's G6 app displays current glucose numbers, trend arrows, and graphs on compatible smartwatches.

DIY diabetes tools are continuously exploring new ways to use existing technology for personalized data viewing. While no non-invasive wristband monitor is widely used yet, several companies are developing such products. Dexcom, a pioneer in smartwatch glucose data viewing, has kept up with evolving consumer technology, with its G5 and G6 models compatible with Apple and Android watches. The compatibility of CGM systems with different phone versions, however, remains inconsistent.

The integration of CGM data with smartwatches is transforming diabetes care, with Medtronic, Garmin, and Dexcom leading the way. Dexcom's upcoming G7 model promises direct-to-watch connectivity, further enhancing the convenience of real-time glucose monitoring. As technology advances, people with diabetes can expect more personalized and innovative tools to manage their condition.
