Domestic violence vigil originally set for the city has been delayed following its initial announcement
In the heart of Alexandria, a poignant event was planned to raise public awareness and provide a space for healing. The Silent Witness Alexandria event aimed to honour the lives of residents who have tragically lost their lives to domestic violence.
The event, originally scheduled for October 2, 2023, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Market Square outside City Hall, was to feature life-sized silhouettes representing the lives lost.
However, an announcement was made by the Alexandria Domestic Violence Program that the Silent Witness Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Program has been postponed. A new date and time for the vigil will be announced once confirmed.
Despite the postponement, the city of Alexandria continues to offer support for those affected by domestic violence. Residents can access domestic violence services by calling the hotline at 703-746-4911. Information about these services is also available on the city's website at alexandriava.gov/DomesticViolence.
To ensure that everyone can participate, the city offers disability accommodations for the event. For any requests or inquiries, residents can contact Christina Damhuis at [email protected] or 703-746-5694. Free interpretation services are also available by emailing [email protected] or calling 703-746-3960.
The Silent Witness Alexandria event is part of a larger initiative to combat domestic violence and provide support for victims. The event, when it is rescheduled, will serve as a powerful reminder of the lives lost and a call to action for the community to work together towards a violence-free future.
In the meantime, the city of Alexandria encourages residents to continue supporting domestic violence survivors and advocating for change. Together, we can make a difference.
