A Tragic Night at St. Mary's Hospital Hamburg: Arson Investigation Underway - Three Lives Lost, One Suspect in Custody
Elderly individuals aged 84 to 87 perished in a devastating hospital blaze. - Elderly Patients (aged 84-87) perished in a hospital blaze.
Emergency services were rushed to St. Mary's Hospital in Hamburg, Germany, as flames took hold of the facility, leaving three innocent lives extinguished. A 72-year-old suspect has since been apprehended.
Firefighter Lorenz Hartmann described the grisly scene that unfolded: "At the windows, there were several patients calling for help." The inferno erupted on a geriatric ward, with flames pouring from the ground floor window and swiftly engulfing the facade, spreading to the floor above. The shattering window on the level above mongered smoke into the neurological ward.
Tragedy struck for three patients, aged 84, 85, and 87, as rescue efforts came too late. One more patient sustained serious injuries, while 34 others were left hurt.
Navigating the Smoky Chaos
The rescue mission was anything but straightforward, as elderly patients in wheelchairs were forced to traverse smoky corridors while donning escape hoods. Patients with the capacity to move could be hoisted to safety via an aerial ladder or portable ladders.
One affected individual shared their experience with the "Hamburg Evening Post": "We were taken over to the emergency room. Those who could walk had to walk. The others were pushed. It all happened very quickly and quite orderly."
A Maze of Smoke and Steam
Police on the scene reported that the thick cloud of smoke and steam rendered visibility nearly non-existent for emergency responders. The smoky corridors were so dense that some patients were initially left behind, as rescuers were unable to locate them amidst the deadly fog. The risk of smoke inhalation increased exponentially in the tunnels.
Firefighters attacked the blaze from both sides of House 2, rescuing patients from the four-story building. Hartmann could not provide an exact number of individuals present within the complex.
The fire department was alerted at around 0.23 am. Initial forces were met with the need for reinforcements, resulting in the deployment of four fire engines and 160 firefighters. Additional aid organizations joined the effort, bolstering the total force to a staggering 220 personnel. The fire was extinguished approximately 20 minutes later, according to the spokesman.
Raised Barriers and Melted Windows
Emergency forces struggled to reach the desperate calls for help emanating from the hospital's exterior, as a trench of sorts surrounded the basements' windows, forcing firefighters in full protective gear and equipment to climb 2.50 meters to enter windows. The windows themselves were made of plastic, with the source of the fire and the window above it left completely charred.
A soot streak trailed up towards the top floor of the building, and as the firefighting operation concluded, spotlights illuminated the damaged areas. Investigators suspect that potentially toxic gases may still be present in the aftermath of the blaze.
Crisis Intervention for Trauma Support
The Catholic St. Mary's Hospital is a significant clinic within Hamburg's Hohenfelde district, boasting around 600 beds and treating nearly 93,000 patients each year. Most of the injured were transported to the hospital's central emergency room. Only two individuals were transferred to neighboring hospitals under the close supervision of the fire department.
A crisis intervention team was established to support the hospital's staff in the wake of the terrifying events. Quietly, rescuers themselves also received assistance from the crisis intervention team as they grappled with the emotional fallout.
One Suspect in Custody
A 72-year-old patient, identified as the prime suspect, was detained on the grounds of suspected arson following the fire's suppression. This individual will appear before an investigative judge on Monday to determine a preventative measure.
