A 49-year-old resident of Petropavlovsk, severely electrocuted and left with burns covering approximately 35% of his body, has been discharged from the hospital after a two-month stay, including a full month in intensive care.

The man was initially brought to the multi-profile city hospital of emergency medical care in an unconscious state and severe shock. Doctors immediately connected him to a ventilator and began a series of examinations to assess his condition.

Over the next two months, the man underwent four operations, with the first focusing on stabilizing his critical condition and addressing his extensive burn injuries. The surgeries were followed by intensive physical and occupational therapy to restore function and mobility, as well as pain management strategies for chronic discomfort.

The man spent a full month in intensive care, where the fight for his life began from the very first minutes. The medical team chose a treatment strategy that aimed to address both the immediate physical challenges and the potential long-term effects of his injuries.

The man developed brain edema, a swelling of the brain, and spent several days in a critical condition. However, with the dedicated efforts of the medical team, he was eventually stabilized and discharged from the hospital a few days ago, in a conscious and stable condition.

The road to recovery will be long and challenging, with the man likely facing physical, neurological, and psychological repercussions from his injuries.

Long-term physical effects may include permanent scarring and disfigurement, chronic pain, and limited mobility caused by contractures or joint stiffness. Muscle weakness, spasms, fatigue, and reduced range of motion can persist. Severe electrical burns often cause deep tissue damage, which may lead to systemic complications such as muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and acute kidney injury.

Neurologically, survivors may experience persistent issues such as neuropathy (nerve damage), seizures, syncope, tinnitus, paresthesias (tingling sensations), weakness, and problems with balance or coordination. Cognitive effects, including memory problems, attention difficulties, personality changes, and headaches, are also reported.

Psychologically, patients often face emotional trauma manifesting as depression, anxiety, irritability, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and behavioral changes. This neuropsychological injury is sometimes described as post-electric shock syndrome and can resemble symptoms of traumatic brain injury. Long-term psychological treatment, including cognitive behavioral therapy and neuropsychological interventions, may be necessary.

The recovery process for such severe injury is lengthy and multidisciplinary, involving acute care to stabilize physical damage, multiple surgeries, intensive physical and occupational therapy, pain management strategies, psychological counseling and psychiatric support, regular follow-up to monitor for complications, neuropsychological evaluations and rehabilitation if cognitive or behavioral impairments develop.
