Enlargement of Women's Shelter to Accommodate 17 Residences

Darmstadt City Council, in conjunction with Bauverein AG, plans an expansion of the existing women's shelter in Darmstadt, driven partly by the Istanbul Convention that highlights a shortage of available spaces.

In a significant step towards providing adequate support for women and children fleeing domestic violence, the city of Darmstadt has announced plans to rebuild its women's shelter. The decision comes in light of the current shelter's inadequate capacity, which resulted in 96 women and 92 children being turned away last year due to lack of space or unfulfillable special requirements.

The new building, set to commence construction by the end of this year and complete by December 2023, will focus on barrier-free access, a feature that is currently not feasible at the current location due to space constraints. This emphasis on accessibility aligns with the city's commitment to the right to life and physical integrity, as enshrined in the Basic Law, and its "zero tolerance for violence against women."

The Istanbul Convention recommends that countries aim to provide one family place in domestic violence shelters per 10,000 inhabitants [1]. Given Darmstadt's estimated population of approximately 160,000, it should ideally have about 16 family places to meet the convention's guidelines. However, without specific data on Darmstadt's current provision, it is difficult to evaluate how well it aligns with these recommendations.

Meanwhile, the city centre is currently a bustling venue for the 75th Heinerfest, a celebration filled with parties, fun, and the joy of life. Elsewhere, concerns about an increased concentration of blue algae in Grube Prinz von Hessen have been raised. The monitoring stage for the area has been raised to "Increased Attention" due to the blue algae, and the public is advised to exercise caution.

In other news, the Bundestag's information bus was in Darmstadt for a duration of three days, with Gumbert Salonek, a freelance employee of the Bundestag, present to explain the purpose of the bus. The federal subsidies for the protection of women and children are expected from 2027, as anchored in the currently adopted Violence Assistance Act.

The new women's shelter, scheduled to be built by December 2023, will not only prioritize barrier-free access, a feature lacking in the current location, but will also expand its services to include health-and-wellness and womens-health facilities, aligning with the city's commitment to women's rights and wellbeing. The bundled federal subsidies for the protection of women and children, as outlined in the currently adopted Violence Assistance Act, are expected to facilitate such expansions from 2027 onwards.
