In the vibrant heartlands of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, the German Red Cross (DRK) is doing mighty fine when it comes to blood reserves, thanks to a decent donor turnout and a recent surge in willingness. "We're chillin' this summer, the donation spirit's been stable," says Markus Baulke from the Blood Donation Service of the DRK's state associations in Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Oldenburg, and Bremen (NSTOB). Even though the NSTOB region's donation rate's on the up in all federal states, it's a continuous battle, he asserts, particularly as we navigate the sultry summer months. After all, people tend to jet off on vacations and forget about their life-saving responsibility. And, let's face it, even the hardiest donors can't face the heat when it hits 30°C.

Blood's Daily Essential

Baulke explains theustenance demand for whole blood daily amounts to around 3,000 generous human-powered donors in the NSTOB region, with Saxony-Anhalt alone needing up to 500 units a day, and Thuringia requiring about 350.

However, the question remains: are we going to have enough donors as the years roll by? Baby boomers have been the mainstay donors, giving as much as three times a year, compared to the millennials and Gen Z who mostly contribute twice. To change the needle on this trend, the DRK reworked its strategies—and one smart move was the development of a blood donation app, which has over 1.5 million registrations and allows users to reserve donation slots for speedy check-ins.

Blood: The Universal Superpower

This vital life fluid plays a crucial role in countless medical situations, from cancer treatment to heart disease, stomach and intestinal ailments, accidents, childbirth complications, surgeries, and various procedures. In fact, several products can be derived from a single donation, making each gallon an irreplaceable gift.

According to DRK's guidelines, a healthy adult who weighs more than 50 kilograms can donate blood, but there are certain conditions and recent activities that might disqualify you.

The DRK's ingenious use of technology (the donation app) is a step in the right direction, and we can deduce a few strategies that might work for attracting younger donors:

Although the DRK hasn't publicly shared its specific strategies for millennials and Gen Z donors, applying these broader strategies might help bring more life-saving donations to the table. After all, every drop counts!
