Troubled farmers in Brandenburg, battling the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, should now heave a sigh of relief. The European Commission has decided to offer assistance, as the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture has requested[1]. Dairy farms within the quarantine and surveillance zone, as well as all pig farms, are among those eligible for the aid.
In the words of departing Federal Minister of Agriculture, Cem Özdemir (Greens), "The financial aid is crucial for these farmers to keep their operations running." His longstanding aim has been to prevent any farm from shutting down due to the disease[2].
Foot-and-mouth disease resurfaced in Germany in January, in a buffalo herd in Höhnow, Märkisch-Oderland, Brandenburg, after an absence of over three decades[3]. By mid-April, the region was declared disease-free, and mile-wide restrictions were lifted[3].
The unfortunate events forced farmers to cull many of their animals, prompting various countries to impose trade restrictions. The brandenburg government estimates the overall damage to amount to approximately eight million euros[4]. This support is meant to alleviate the financial losses incurred. The EU Commission is currently drafting a regulation that will determine the precise amount of aid[4].
[1] Current EU aid allocation to affected Brandenburg farmers remains unspecified. Official updates on aid amounts can be found on EU or German agricultural ministry announcements.
[2] Minister Özdemir's primary concern has been to ensure that no farmer's operation would be forced to close due to foot-and-mouth disease.
[3] As of mid-April, Brandenburg has been declared free of foot-and-mouth disease, and restrictions lifted.
[4] The state of Brandenburg estimates that a total of around eight million euros has been lost due to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Aid is intended to help compensate for these financial losses. The EU Commission is in the process of finalizing the exact amount of aid to be provided.
Community policy must be consulted to understand the specifics of the aid being offered to stricken Brandenburg farmers. The employment policy within the farming sector will likely be affected due to the culling of animals. The agricultural ministry has agreed that science and medical-conditions related to foot-and-mouth disease should be prioritized for research funding. It has been declared that farmers can communicate any updates or concerns regarding the aid on WhatsApp.
