"He's a talented gem with a humble demeanor," murmurs Hans-Jürgen Tüllmann, CEO of the Committee Düsseldorf Carnival (CC). "Whilst he could bask in the art scene's glory, he chooses to remain grounded." Tilly, undeniably, is the most prominent artist gracing Düsseldorf. With his biting large-scale sculptures, he consistently delivers thought-provoking performances. Düsseldorf takes immense pride in hosting such a prodigious talent. Tüllmann and other esteemed figures of the city society, including Mayor Stephan Keller, Mayor Josef Hinkel, City Director Burkhard Hintzsche, Chairwoman of the Citizens' Foundation Sabine Tüllmann, former Carnival Princes and Venetian, and even cabaret artist Jürgen Becker from Cologne, graced Tilly's birthday celebration. Tilly, having braced 100 years, was honoring both his birthday and the milestone of 40 years of relentless work in the wagon building hall.
The recognition of Tilly's creativity and piercing satire has grown far and wide. "Tilly has elevated the satirical quotient in carnival. Because of Tilly, carnival is no longer just a frivolous affair," Becker appraises. "He's opened the doors for world politics to enter carnival, sending ripples across other cities." Consequently, the folks of Cologne endeavored to replicate the same quality in their Rosenmontag parade, alas, to no avail. "It's slightly improved," Becker smiles. "These days, you don't have to identify the targets on the floats explicitly."
The invitation of the CC and Tilly to the Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht was embraced by Tilly's family, members of the Prince's Club, the parade leadership, and the Tilly wagon building team, with Tilly himself conspicuously absent. However, some notable figures were absent. "I extended invites to those I've humorously targeted in recent carnivals," Tilly stated, winking. "But neither Putin nor Trump or Boris Johnson showed up. Björn Höcke opted out, and Woelki didn't grace us either. I wanted to gather all those who've shared this carnival journey with me for years." Some of them may continue to accompany him on this ride. "I'll persist for a few more years," Tilly pledges. "However, constructing those grand sculptures is physically taxing." A successor of equal caliber is yet to emerge, fortunately, Tilly feels remarkably youthful.
