In a study published in the International Journal of Cancer, participants with colorectal cancer in stages 1 through 3 who drank four cups of coffee daily were found to have a 32% lower risk of colorectal cancer recurrence.

Possible mechanisms contributing to this reduction in cancer risk include the following:

  • It may contribute to the health of gut bacteria.
  • Coffee could inhibit the growth of tumors.
  • It may help protect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

The study provides evidence that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of colorectal cancer compared to non-coffee drinkers. However, it should be noted that caffeinated coffee may have a higher association with rectal cancer, whereas decaffeinated coffee does not appear to influence the risk of colon cancer.
