Face Yoga Gains Attention for Potential Anti-Aging Benefits
Face yoga, a practice combining facial exercises and yoga principles, has gained attention for its potential to improve facial appearance. While some studies show promising results, evidence remains unclear. Safety is generally assured with correct technique, but improper practice may cause strain or irritation.
Face yoga involves specific exercises targeting facial and neck muscles. Each exercise is performed for 30 seconds to 2 minutes, repeated 5 to 10 times per session, with multiple sessions per week. Common exercises include forehead smoother, cheek lifter, eye circles, neck stretch, lip exercises, jaw release, and lion's breath.
The practice was developed by Fumiko Takatsu, a Japanese yoga teacher. It combines facial muscle contractions, stretching, massage, and breathing exercises to strengthen and tone facial muscles. Some studies suggest it may improve skin elasticity and reduce fine lines, potentially contributing to a firmer appearance. A 2018 study found that 20 weeks of daily facial exercises increased cheek fullness and reduced perceived age by 2-3 years in middle-aged females. However, a 2025 study found varied effects on different facial muscles after 8 weeks of intensive practice.
Face yoga may offer potential benefits for facial appearance, but evidence is mixed. It is generally safe when performed correctly, but those with skin conditions like active acne or rosacea should consult a healthcare professional before starting. Further research is needed to fully understand its effects and optimize its practice.
