Flight Medic Chad Hollingsworth Shares Stress Management Tips at World Extreme Medicine Conference
Flight paramedic and educator Chad Hollingsworth recently presented at the World Extreme Medicine Conference. His session, titled 'Resilience in Extreme Healthcare Settings', explored the impact of high-stakes situations on healthcare providers and strategies to manage stress and trauma in extreme healthcare settings.
Hollingsworth, known for his work in emergency medical services, discussed crucial aspects of maintaining resilience in extreme healthcare settings. He began by highlighting the importance of recognising cumulative stress and moral injury, along with early warning signs of burnout. The session delved into techniques for managing stress before, during, and after shifts, including pre-shift readiness, on-shift cues, and post-shift decompression rituals.
A significant part of the session focused on micro-debriefs and peer support techniques. Hollingsworth emphasised the need to avoid blame and reduce 'second-victim' harm, where healthcare providers themselves become victims after making mistakes. He also covered family communication, setting boundaries, and navigating clinician-as-patient experiences.
Hollingsworth introduced a 'plan with failure in mind' approach for high-stakes procedures. This involves defining a plan B upfront and being prepared to change variables after failed attempts. He illustrated these points with personal experiences, including a fatal farm-silo incident and a near-fatal surgical complication, demonstrating his first-hand understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare providers in extreme situations.
Chad Hollingsworth's presentation at the World Extreme Medicine Conference offered valuable insights into managing stress and trauma in extreme healthcare settings. By discussing recognising stress, managing shifts, peer support, and planning for failure, Hollingsworth provided practical strategies for healthcare providers to enhance their resilience and better cope with the challenges they face.
