Former municipal official transitions to domestic duties, now serving as caregiver for his wife suffering from dementia
In a small town in Germany, Manfred Waters, a former mayor and professional soldier, is facing a new challenge in his life - caring for his wife Ellen, who has been diagnosed with dementia.
The couple, who have been married for 60 years, met at a dance event in Venlo, Netherlands, in 1962. Ellen, a native of the Netherlands, and Manfred built their own house in Kleinbottwar in 1982, where they raised their daughters and shared a life filled with love and companionship.
However, the past few years have brought significant changes. Ellen's forgetfulness has increased, and she has shown signs of old age confusion. The family doctor suspects that her dementia could have been exacerbated by anesthetics during operations.
Manfred, who has suffered two strokes, one in October 2020 and another three years later, has had to adapt to new roles in their relationship. He has taken charge of the household as a househusband, learning to cook to cater to his wife's needs.
To help at home, Manfred has hired a mobile care service. The caregiver provides round-the-clock support for both Manfred and Ellen. The caregiver moved in with the couple on August 5th.
Ellen, who was previously responsible for household chores, raising their daughters, and managing Manfred's schedule, now relies on her daughters for help in dealing with her dementia.
Despite the challenges, Manfred has expressed that he will not let his wife go to a care home. He admits it was difficult getting used to having a stranger around all the time, but he has come to appreciate the care and support the caregiver provides.
