Germany Legalizes Home Cannabis Cultivation
Germany's cannabis laws have seen a significant shift with the Cannabis Act, allowing adults to cultivate up to three living plants at home. Alternatively, cultivation associations offer a legal, community-based option for those unable or unwilling to grow at home.
The new law, effective since spring 2024, permits adults residing in Germany for at least six months to grow cannabis, provided they keep it secure from children and young people. Only female plants are of interest due to their resin-rich buds containing the intoxicating substance THC.
Cultivation associations have emerged as a legal alternative. Since July 2024, these associations can offer their adult members cannabis grown together, with a maximum of 50 grams per person per month. However, the focus is on non-commercial, community-based cultivation and distribution, not selling particular strains or seeds.
Private cannabis cultivation and membership in associations are subject to strict conditions, including age and residence requirements. Up to 50 grams of dried cannabis may be stored for personal use. The purchase of cannabis seeds from EU member states is also permitted for private cultivation. This shift in German drug policy reflects a broader trend towards decriminalization and regulation.
