Ghana Launches Mpox Vaccination Drive in Western Region
The Ghana Health Service has launched a significant response to the Mpox outbreak in the Western Region. On October 5, 2025, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Acting Director General, announced a sub-national vaccination initiative, with 20,000 doses of Mpox vaccines received for the region.
The vaccination exercise will span 21 days, kicking off with an aggressive four-day push in the most affected communities. Prioritised for vaccination are all health workers, close contacts of confirmed cases, and residents of seven high-risk districts. The Ghana Health Service has already trained 1,800 clinicians and health staff in surveillance and response activities to ensure a smooth rollout.
To prevent the spread of Mpox, the Ghana Health Service advises proper hand washing, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and refraining from handling their clothing. The Western Region currently battles 59 active cases across 13 districts, with two recorded deaths. Nationally, the African Region has seen 120 deaths from 30,000 confirmed cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to provide technical and operational support to help Ghana end the Mpox outbreak.
The Ghana Health Service's Mpox vaccination initiative aims to protect high-risk populations and curb the spread of the virus in the Western Region. With the support of the WHO, Ghana strives to bring an end to the Mpox outbreak, following a 21-day vaccination exercise and adherence to preventive measures.
