Gordon Moody unveils fresh training program for gambling crisis response
Gordon Moody, the UK's leading charity for residential treatment of gambling-related harms, has launched a new training programme called "Bet You Can Help" (BYCH). This initiative aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and confidence to support those affected by or at risk of gambling-related harm.
Monica Shafaq, CEO of Gordon Moody, expressed her delight at the launch, stating, "This training is a vital link connecting those in need with the right support services. It empowers individuals to create supportive, non-judgmental environments where speaking about these issues is encouraged, and a clear action plan is in place to help individuals gain professional help."
The training, accredited by The Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH), adopts a holistic approach, combining mental health awareness with practical first-aid techniques. It focuses not just on intervention but on understanding the mental and emotional aspects of gambling-related harm.
The two-day course, suitable for anyone aged 18 and over, can be delivered online or face-to-face. It equips participants to provide first aid style support and guidance for gambling-related harms, reducing fear and uncertainty when addressing these issues.
According to Shafaq, 4.2 billion people across the globe gamble at least once each year, making this an issue that requires more attention. She emphasized the importance of addressing the stigma associated with seeking support for gambling-related harm.
Gordon Moody, founded in 1971 with over 50 years' experience in providing residential support and treatment for gambling addiction, has residential treatment centres across the UK. The charity's services are generally provided free of charge due to funding. The majority of this funding currently comes from GambleAware.
