Sizzling Summer, Cool AC Tweaks Ahead! 🔥⚡️
Government intends to set a 20-degree ceiling for air conditioners nationwide in India
With a scorching heatwave looming over Delhi and electricity demand skyrocketing, the Indian government is planning a game-changer: standardized temperature settings for air conditioners! Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, took to the stage in Delhi on Tuesday to announce this first-of-its-kind restriction: ACs will be set between 20°C and 28°C, a move designed to ease the pressure on our national power grid during the blazing summer months.
This rule applies to homes, hotels, and vehicles alike and aims to curb electricity usage, especially during peak summer hours. Air conditioners currently account for about 50 gigawatts of electricity usage - around 20% of the country's peak demand! Experts say that every 1°C rise in AC temperature can slash energy consumption by 6%[1]. Simply setting your AC just 1 degree higher could save around 3 gigawatts during peak times.
Studies by the University of California, Berkeley, suggest that standardizing AC temperatures could prevent the need for a whopping 60 gigawatts of new power infrastructure by 2035, saving a mind-boggling Rs 7.5 trillion ($88 billion)! [2] In a year where electricity use hit a record 250 gigawatts and is projected to reach 270 gigawatts, this change could literally save us from blackouts.
So, what can you do to keep cool while helping the planet and your wallet in the process? Here are 5 hacks to help you cope with the heat:
- Cool Blockade: Install blackout curtains to prevent that heatwave from barging into your cozy abode.
- Shady Sanctuary: Plant trees and shrubs on the sunny south and west sides of your home to provide shade and shelter from the blazing sun.
- Cross Breeze: Maximize cross-ventilation by opening windows on opposite sides of your house - you'll create a refreshing breeze to help circulate cool air around your home.
- Fan the Flame: Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to expel hot, humid air and let the cool air in.
- Lighten the Load: Opt for LED or CFL light bulbs, as they give off less heat compared to traditional incandescent bulbs.
Stay cool, Indians! Together, we can conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure grid stability during those dog days of summer. 🔥
