Title: Whip Up a Awesome Shawarma Wrap** Using Homemade Flatbread, Tahini Sauce, and Sumac! (Easy Recipe Inside!)
Difficulty: Breezy
Ingredients (15 total)
For the flatbread:- 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)- 1 teaspoon salt- 1 teaspoon baking powder- 1 tablespoon olive oil- 3/4 cup warm water (adjust as needed)
For the beef (or lamb):- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar- 1 tablespoon lemon juice- 1 teaspoon ground allspice- Salt and pepper to taste- 1 lb of beef (flank steak or sirloin) or lamb strips
Tahini sauce:- 1 cup tahini paste- 1/4 cup lemon juice- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced- Water (to thin)- Salt to taste
Onion relish:- 1 diced sweet or red onion- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped Italian parsley- 1 tablespoon ground sumac
Step-by-Step Instructions
For the Flatbread1. Mix up the dry ingredients - combine the flour, salt, and baking powder in a large mixing bowl.2. Form a well in the middle of the dry mixture, and add the olive oil, then gradually pour in the warm water. Stir until a dough begins to form.3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, dust in a bit more flour.4. Allow the dough to rest, covered, for at least 30 minutes. Then divide it into 8 equal pieces, roll each piece into a ball, and flatten with your hands. Use a rolling pin to roll it out into a thin circle, about 1/4-inch thick.5. Cook each flatbread on a hot skillet or griddle for about 1-2 minutes on each side, until it puffs up and has nice brown spots. Keep them warm in a towel while you cook the rest.
For the Beef1. Prepare the marinade by mixing olive oil, vinegar, garlic, and spices. Coat the sliced beef in the marinade and let it sit for at least 1 hour (or better yet, refrigerate overnight for even more flavor).2. Cook the marinated beef quickly for about 3-4 minutes until it's cooked through and browned.
For the Tahini Sauce1. Mix together the tahini paste, lemon juice, minced garlic, and salt. Gradually add water until you reach a smooth and pourable consistency. Adjust seasoning as needed.
For the Onion Relish1. Combine diced onion, chopped Italian parsley, and sumac.
Assemble the Wrap1. Spread the tahini sauce in the center of a warm flatbread.2. Add a layer of cooked beef on top.3. Pile on the onion relish.4. Wrap tightly and devour!
