Guaranteed Job Change for Over 80% of Gen Z Workers Within Four Days for Lower Wages

Berlin (ots) - A new study by BuchhaltungsButler and DataPulse Research reveals that an astonishing three out of four Gen-Z employees would swap their current jobs for a four-day workweek, even if it means a pay cut. This shift towards shorter workweeks is gaining momentum, particularly among the younger generation.

In the era of tightening job markets and slow economic growth in Germany, companies must stand out as attractive employers more than ever. Modern work models are becoming increasingly important, and our latest survey delves into the preferences of modern employees.

While earlier studies hinted that many German workers would opt for fewer hours for the same pay, our survey uncovers a significant age disparity when it comes to the allure of a four-day workweek:

  • 75% of Gen-Zers would ditch their current job for a four-day workweek, even at 80% of the usual salary. Comparatively, only about 40% of individuals aged 45 and over expressed similar feelings.
  • 24% of respondents are already employed in companies that have fully or partially implemented the four-day workweek. Among those aged 18 to 44, this percentage increases to one-third.
  • Among employees who’ve experienced the four-day workweek, 60% report a positive impact on the work atmosphere.

HR expert Marie Møgelvang, CHRO at e-conomic, a Danish market leader in accounting software, and advisory board member of BuchhaltungsButler, affirms, "Four-day workweeks are becoming increasingly vital for attracting and retaining young talent in the fierce competition."

Who was surveyed?Over a thousand full-time employees from various industries and company sizes in Germany were questioned about four-day workweeks in November 2024 by BuchhaltungsButler. The participants were aged 18 and over and worked in sectors such as retail and wholesale, production, healthcare, construction, finance, services, IT, education, agriculture, and media.

Positive Experiences and High Test ReadinessThe majority of those who had tried the four-day workweek confirm an improved mood at work. A staggering 86% of all respondents are eager to test the four-day workweek, with the highest demand coming from those aged 18 to 24 (97%).

The Future of Work Encourages FlexibilityOur survey underlines that many employees find flexibility appealing and are willing to accept salary cuts for it, with Gen-Z demonstrating a particularly strong interest in the four-day workweek. Companies must update their work models if they want to compete for young talent.
