Half a century of honoring the Carol Nachman Award

The Carol Nachman State Capital Rheumatology Award and the Carol Nachman Medal, two of the most generously endowed and prestigious awards in the field of rheumatology, have been bestowed upon some of the industry's most distinguished professionals over the years.

Established in 1972, the Carol Nachman State Capital Rheumatology Award recognises outstanding contributions in the field of rheumatology. Over the past five decades, this award has been presented to a number of eminent figures, including Professor Dr. Steffen Gay in 1978, Professor Dr. Jürgen Braun in 2000, and Professor Dr. Desirée van der Heijde in 2011. This year, the award was jointly given to Italian scientist and physician Dr. Maria-Antonietta D'Agostino and her Dutch colleague, Dr. Maarten Boers.

The Carol Nachman Medal, another highly respected accolade, is awarded for lifetime achievements in rheumatology. Notable recipients include Professor Dr. Reinhold E. Schmidt of Iserhagen, who received the award posthumously, and Dieter Wiek of Hünxe. In 2016, Professor Dr. Angela Zink was honoured with the Carol Nachman Medal.

The Board of Trustees, led by President Professor Dr. Elisabeth Märker-Hermann, oversees the selection process for these awards. Other members of the Board include Professor Dr. Klaus Schmidt, Professor Dr. Philipp Drees, Professor Dr. Andreas Schwarting, and Professor Dr. Maarten Boers, who was also awarded the Carol Nachman State Capital Rheumatology Award this year.

The Golden Book, which immortalises past recipients and members of the Board of Trustees, has been updated this year to include the current awardees and members of the Board of Trustees. This tradition serves as a testament to the continued growth and recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of rheumatology.

For those interested in the past recipients of these awards, specialist rheumatology associations, official award announcements, or medical society publications that focus on rheumatology honors would be the best resources to consult. A notable past recipient includes Professor Dr. Renate Gay, who was awarded the Carol Nachman State Capital Rheumatology Award in 1984.

These awards not only celebrate the achievements of these esteemed professionals but also inspire future generations to continue pushing the boundaries of rheumatology research and treatment.
