Montreal Heatwave Continues, With Three Confirmed Heat-Related Deaths

Montreal is currently experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 34°C, according to Environment Canada. This extreme heat has unfortunately led to the tragic loss of at least 3 lives, as reported by Montreal's public health department.

This latest heatwave follows an earlier one in late June, during which Montreal reported 5 heat-related deaths. As a result, the total number of heat-related deaths in Montreal this year has reached at least 8.

In an effort to better understand and address the impact of heat on public health, Montreal's public health department has implemented a requirement for emergency room doctors to report any suspected heat-related deaths or cases of heat stroke within 24 hours. This measure is aimed at improving identification and prevention, particularly since heat-related fatalities can be undercounted due to complications in attributing deaths directly to heat or exacerbations of chronic illnesses.

Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for Montreal, forecasting highs around 33–34°C for several days. These conditions can raise mortality risks, particularly for vulnerable populations with pre-existing chronic health problems.

It is important to note that some deaths related to heat might not be fully captured due to challenges in linking heat directly as a cause. Officials continue to urge caution and vigilance, particularly for those with pre-existing health conditions.

As the heatwave continues, Montreal's public health department has reported no patients admitted to hospital for heat stroke since Sunday. The number of heat-related deaths this year in Montreal may unfortunately increase as the extreme heat continues.

In other news, Miracle Treat Day is supporting Jim Pattison Children's Hospital through Kids Connection, and a new FDA-approved eye drop product can help fix near vision issues. Additionally, there is a fundraising event in support of Alberta Children's Hospital.
