"Heed caution, avoid disregarding!"
In the heart of Düsseldorf, the central library and women's support facilities are coming together for a significant event titled "Anna Speaks...". This online literary portrayal of a fictional woman's biography aims to raise awareness about the prevalence and impact of domestic and sexualized violence.
The event, scheduled for an undisclosed date due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, will feature video contributions. A video created especially for the action will be published on the Facebook page of the city of Düsseldorf (de-de.facebook.com/duesseldorf/) on November 25th.
Elisabeth Wilfart, the equality officer of Düsseldorf, has emphasized the importance of vigilance in the current situation, urging everyone not to turn a blind eye to noises from neighbouring apartments that may indicate violence. She has also stated that every third woman in Germany is affected by physical and/or sexualized violence at some point in her life.
The equality office of Düsseldorf has carried out a photo action called "Every 3rd Woman" to visualize the number of affected women. Silhouettes representing women were placed on a tram, ice rink, and theater basement in the city. The photos of this action will be published on the Facebook page of the equality office (www.facebook.com/gleichstellungdus/) on November 25th.
The nationwide helpline "Violence against Women" has been available since 2013 as a free, confidential counseling service in 17 languages. The telephone number, 08000116016, will be printed on the flags that will be hoisted on various municipal buildings in Düsseldorf, including the town hall, town hall Benrath, and town hall Kaiserswerth.
Interested parties can find the event at www.frauenberatungsstelle.de/. Family doctors were sensitized to the topic of "domestic violence" through an information letter in the spring. Elisabeth Wilfart appeals for solidarity in the current time.
While specific planned actions for the 2025 event are not yet confirmed, similar action days against violence towards women typically include public demonstrations or marches, information and awareness campaigns, workshops, and discussions on violence prevention and support services, as well as collaborations with local authorities, NGOs, and social services. For precise information about Düsseldorf’s action day on violence against women, it is recommended to consult the official websites of Düsseldorf’s city government, local women’s shelters, or organizations dedicated to combating gender-based violence closer to or on the event date.
