HHS Ensures Essential Health Services During U.S. Government Shutdown

Despite a U.S. federal government shutdown, crucial health programs will continue. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will maintain essential services, with 79,717 employees continuing to work. However, 32,460 staff will be furloughed, affecting many services and causing delays.

During the shutdown, HHS will keep vital public health services, emergency response, and critical health functions running. Agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will maintain infectious disease control but may reduce research, administrative functions, and some non-emergency operations. Around 41% of HHS's total staff will be furloughed, leading to interruptions and delays in various services and departmental functions.

Partially exempted agencies include the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), CDC, and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Roughly 15,000 retained employees will perform activities required by law.

While the federal government shutdown continues, HHS ensures that essential health services remain operational. However, staff furloughs may cause delays and interruptions in other services, affecting approximately 41% of HHS's total staff.
