Flames in Marienkrankenhaus Hospital: Death and Injuries
Hospital blaze: Patient ignites pillow, causing fatal incident
A tragic incident has hit the Marienkrankenhaus hospital in Hamburg, Germany. A devastating fire, believed to have been started by a burning pillow in a patient's room, claimed the lives of three elderly individuals aged 84, 85, and 87. The blaze also left at least 34 people injured, with one individual in critical condition.
The 72-year-old suspect, a fellow patient, is believed to be the one who set the fierce blaze, as reported by the public prosecutor's office spokesperson to the German Press Agency. The German is said to have started the fire in a state of non-responsibility or reduced responsibility.
On Monday, a judge made the decision to provisionally commit the man to a psychiatric clinic, with the commitment order concerning arson resulting in death. Despite the ruling, the legal assessment's future remains unclear, as the investigations are in their early stages.
Several witnesses led investigators to the suspect, who was arrested in the hospital on Sunday. It has been discovered that the fire broke out on the ground floor of the clinic, in a room on the geriatric ward, spreading to the facade of the upper floor and filling the four-story building with smoke.
The Catholic Marienkrankenhaus is one of the largest hospitals in Hamburg, boasting around 600 beds and treating around 93,000 patients annually. The hospital specializes in caring for older patients.
On Monday afternoon, a memorial for the victims was held in the clinic. A condolence book for the hospital staff is also available in the hospital's chapel, organized by the pastoral care. These services were intended for hospital staff, but similar offerings will be available for relatives and affected individuals during the week.
