Immunity under siege by an unyielding poison

In a groundbreaking study led by Dr. Gunda Herberth of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, it has been revealed that PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) negatively impact the immune system, leaving both adults and children more susceptible to infections and potentially reducing vaccine efficacy.

The research, conducted in collaboration with institutions in Germany and Italy, used a special immunological measurement method known as multiparameter spectral flow cytometry to determine that PFAS reduce the in vitro activation of human T cells and basophils.

For children, this exposure can lead to a reduced response to vaccines, raising concerns about decreased protection from diseases like measles or influenza. In adults, it is associated with increased susceptibility to infections such as colds and flu, often with longer recovery times. Some studies also report diminished responses to flu vaccines, suggesting that PFAS weaken the immune system’s ability to respond adequately to immunization.

The mechanism behind this immunosuppressive effect is believed to be the suppression of the immune system’s ability to produce antibodies, which are crucial to fighting infections. PFAS exposure begins in utero and transfers from mother to fetus, meaning immune effects can initiate very early in life.

Beyond immunity, PFAS exposure is linked to systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation, contributing to chronic inflammation markers such as altered white blood cell counts and immune cell ratios. Studies on wildlife exposed to PFAS, such as alligators in North Carolina, show similar immune dysfunctions, underscoring the substances' immunotoxicity.

As PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," are carbon atoms surrounded by fluorine atoms and never break down, it is essential to take steps to lower exposure. This can be achieved by drinking filtered tap water, using PFAS-free dental floss, checking safe cosmetics recommendations, and using cast iron or ceramic-coated cookware.

It's important to note that early evidence suggests that vitamin D3 may have a modifying effect on the immune system, fortifying the body against viral and bacterial diseases. Further research is needed to understand the full extent of this interaction and how it could be harnessed to mitigate the effects of PFAS exposure.

In conclusion, PFAS have a notable immunosuppressive effect across the life span, with children especially vulnerable due to ongoing immune development and greater exposure through diet and environment. This impairment elevates risks of infections, reduces vaccine effectiveness, and may contribute to chronic immune-related conditions. As research continues, it is crucial to remain vigilant about PFAS exposure and take steps to protect ourselves and our families from these harmful substances.
