Taiwanese Man Sentenced to 9 Years and 6 Months for Drunk Driving Hit-and-Run Incident

In a recent court case, a man named Huang was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison for a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a man and injuries to his wife.

The incident occurred on March 16, 2021, at 7:37pm in Changhua District, Hemei Township. Huang was driving under the influence, as his breath alcohol concentration was 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L), well above the 0.15mg/L legal limit. After hitting the couple, Huang fled the scene in an attempt to evade responsibility.

Huang initially stopped at the scene for 6 seconds but did not get out of his vehicle before fleeing. He later tried to shift the blame to his wife, claiming she had been the one driving. However, the court found Huang fully responsible for the crash, as he had also been speeding and failed to keep a proper lookout.

The husband died after 21 days of treatment due to head trauma and complications from acute respiratory distress syndrome. Huang's actions showed a lack of genuine remorse, according to the court.

The court took into account Huang's children and lack of prior criminal or traffic violations in the sentencing. Huang was given a sentence of 7 years and 2 months for causing a death while driving under the influence, and an additional sentence of 4 years and 8 months was given for fleeing the scene of the crash.

It is not uncommon for such drivers to receive stringent penalties in Taiwan, reflecting the seriousness with which such crimes are treated. The verdict in the case can be appealed.
