Individual sustains severe burns in Sabugal blaze

In the municipality of Sabugal, a tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when a 45-year-old employee of the forest protection company Afocelca, a company owned by the cellulose sector groups Altri and Navigator, suffered extensive burns while fighting a fire.

The incident took place in the Vale da Senhora da Póvoa area, a locality on the border with Sabugal, and the alert for the injuries was given at 16:46. The National Authority for Civil Protection and Emergency (ANEPC) reported the incident in a press release sent to Lusa.

The injured employee was part of a five-member team from Afocelca, and the other four members suffered minor injuries. The source of the information is from the Sub-Regional Command of the Beiras and Serra da Estrela.

The victim, identified as Daniel Esteves, was transported to São João Hospital in Porto for treatment. The latest update is that he is currently being assessed and stabilized in the emergency department.

Unfortunately, on August 22, 2025, Daniel Esteves passed away. He had burns on 75% of his body, making him the fourth wildfire fatality related to this event. The incident is a fire, and no new information about his current condition or hospital status was provided in this paragraph.

The INEM teams provided assistance at the scene, and the alert was given in the Vale da Senhora da Póvoa area, a locality in the municipality of Penamacor. The forest fire occurred in the municipality of Sabugal.
