Intensifying Israel-Palestine Conflict: WHO Warns Hospitals Teetering on the Edge in Gaza City as Israel Pursues Brutal Assault, Risking Catastrophic Humanitarian Crisis Amid Accusations of Forced Ethonic Cleansing
In the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for an immediate end to inhumane conditions and a ceasefire. The Israeli military's focus appears to be on areas of Gaza City, suggesting an imminent advance on central and western areas.
The situation in Gaza is dire, with hundreds of thousands of Palestinians forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing offensive. The United Nations has described the crisis as nothing short of cataclysmic, deepening a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
Displaced Palestinians are living in makeshift encampments, covering a distance of 22km (14 miles) to the al-Mawasi 'humanitarian zone'. Rachid Abdel Latif Shaaban, a displaced Palestinian, stated that they can't afford to rent a decent place and are surrounded by garbage, sewage, pollution, bacteria, and germs. Another displaced woman, Ayesha Abu Ghof, said she and her children had been forced to live on a landfill and that all their children are sick and suffering from diseases with no doctors or medicine around.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that Israeli attacks had killed at least 79 people and wounded 228 in the latest 24-hour reporting period. This brings the total death toll since the start of the war in October 2023 to 65,141 and the number of wounded to 165,925. Inside the emergency wards of the remaining hospitals, there are more people injured than beds available. Only two hospitals in Gaza City, al-Shifa and al-Ahli, remain partially functional, with acute shortages of medical supplies.
The Israeli offensive has also resulted in the cutting off of internet and phone lines across the Gaza enclave, making it difficult for aid organisations to coordinate their efforts.
Spain has announced its support for the investigation of possible Israeli war crimes by the International Criminal Court. The Spanish Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, stated that the probe will examine whether 'serious violations' of international law have taken place during the war, which has now run for nearly two years. Spain is among Israel's fiercest critics and has announced it will support the ICC's ongoing investigation.
Olga Cherevko, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, has described the conditions as 'nothing short of cataclysmic'. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has stated that the Israeli assault is causing new waves of displacement and forcing families into an area unfit for human dignity.
As the conflict continues, there is an urgent need for a ceasefire and for humanitarian aid to reach the displaced Palestinians in Gaza.
