Investigate and Progress Strategies in Cross-Sectoral Health Studies at Environmental Protection Agency's Research Division
The EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) is offering a research opportunity for analyzing and advancing One Health Approaches. This project involves evaluating and promoting One Health practices at EPA-ORD, identifying ongoing work that embodies the One Health concept, and developing outreach or training materials.
The One Health approach is an integrated framework that recognises the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and environmental health. It aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of all three components together, rather than in isolation. At the EPA's ORD, the One Health approach is being used to create research opportunities that integrate environmental health with human and animal health concerns.
The research under this approach at the EPA focuses on addressing emerging biological threats, environmental exposures, and sustainability challenges through comprehensive study designs that cross traditional sector boundaries. This aligns with global One Health goals promoted by agencies like the WHO, FAO, and UNEP.
The research opportunity is funded through the National Science Foundation Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity, with a maximum duration of 6 months. The qualifications for the research opportunity require a Graduate student or Ph.D. in one of the following fields: Biology, Toxicology, Epidemiology, Environmental Public Health, Environmental Science, Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Veterinary Science, Computer Science, or Bioinformatics.
The fellowship goal is to learn about the One Health concept and help apply it to EPA-ORD research. The opportunity locations are RTP, NC; Washington, DC; Corvallis, OR; Newport, OR; and Cincinnati, OH. The learning objectives include learning about One Health concepts and framework, evaluating One Health practices at EPA-ORD, learning about communication and training mechanisms, and learning about knowledge graphs.
