Investigation Launched After Five Deaths at Odisha Hospital Caused by Misadministered Injection
Koraput: A Tragic Turn of Events at the Hospital
A heart-wrenching incident unfolded at the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Koraput, Odisha. Five critically ill patients lost their lives in a short span, amidst allegations of wrongful injection administration. This harrowing incident occurred on Tuesday night, as reported by various sources.
The deceased patients hailed from different parts of south Odisha, including Koraput, Borigumma, Semiliguda, Malkangiri, and Kalahandi. Initially admitted for post-operative care and critical monitoring in the ICU and surgical wards, these patients succumbed to their injuries in quick succession, around 11 pm on Tuesday.
Family members angrily claim that hospital staff administered the patients a second round of injections right before their deaths. According to the families, the patients were doing well and reacting favorably to treatment before the injections were given.
Currently, an investigation is underway, with police delving deep into the matter and awaiting post-mortem reports to ascertain the exact cause of death. Tension transpired on the hospital premises as furious families gathered, necessitating the presence of Koraput Town Police to maintain order.
Medical Superintendent Susanta Kumar Sahu stated that, when a patient is in a critical stage, necessary injections are often administered to stabilize their condition. He suspected that the injection might not have worked as intended, leading to the patients' demise.
The hospital has established a primary investigative committee, consisting of heads of various departments. Should there be any negligence detected in the administration of medication or treatment, strict action will be taken against the responsible personnel. If any expired medication is discovered, the doctor on duty at the time will face consequences.
When questioned about the series of patient deaths, Susanta Kumar Sahu vowed to investigate the matter further. He emphasized that if there are any deficiencies in the treatment process, decisive action will be taken against those at fault.
With ongoing investigations, there is no solid evidence to support the claim of a wrong injection being the cause of death at this point. However, the inquiry continues to investigate both the possibility of medical neglect and the natural progression of the patients' critical conditions.
