La Cala & Mijas Launch 'Message in a Bottle' for Emergency Medical Info

La Cala Lions Club and Mijas Foreigners Department have joined forces to launch an innovative 'Message in a Bottle' programme. This initiative, already successful in the UK with five million users, aims to provide critical medical information in emergencies, benefiting residents who may struggle to communicate during such situations.

The programme, spearheaded by Lion Anne Bowles of La Cala Lions Club, was presented in collaboration with the Mijas Foreigners Department at the La Cala deputy mayor’s office. It encourages residents to fill out a medical history form, place it in a hermetically sealed bottle, and store it in their fridge. Alert stickers are also provided for the fridge door and home entrance.

The initiative is free and residents can obtain emergency kits from charity shops or by contacting the La Cala Lions Club. Councillor Mario Bravo of the Mijas Foreigners Department praised the programme, highlighting its value for non-Spanish-speaking residents and those living alone. Fernando Juanes and Maria Ysabel Pacheco from Lions Club Madrid and Alicante, respectively, plan to spread the campaign across Spain after witnessing its potential.

The 'Message in a Bottle' programme is now available in La Cala and Mijas, aiming to save lives by providing emergency services quick access to vital medical information. Residents are encouraged to participate and store their medical details in a sealed bottle in their refrigerator, offering peace of mind and potentially life-saving assistance.
