Rescue Efforts Result in the Salvation of 211 Individuals in the Northern Region - Lifesaving Rescue Operations by DLRG: 211 People Saved in Northern Germany
It's a staggering increase! Volunteer lifeguards in Schleswig-Holstein have been working tirelessly to keep swimmers and bathers safe. Last year, they responded to a whopping 211 rescue missions, according to the DLRG (German Life Saving Association). In comparison, the year before saw only 146 such incidents.
While the exact number of individuals pulled from the jaws of drowning is yet to be confirmed, many of these missions also involved lifesaving measures outside the water, such as tackling heart attacks on the beach or attending to other medical emergencies.
Unfortunately, even with the DLRG's best efforts, tragedy still struck: 25 individuals drowned in 2024, down from the 28 reported the previous year.
In 2024, a remarkable force of 5,855 active members stood watch along waterways, keeping a keen eye out for potential dangers and providing nearly 188,000 hours of critical water rescue services. They assisted a total of 2,211 people.
On a national scale, the DLRG saved 1,446 lives from life-threatening situations last year, marking a significant increase from the 1,120 rescued in 2023. Among those saved were 699 individuals rescued from drowning, down from the 870 in the previous year. However, the DLRG was unable to aid 411 people, who tragically drowned in 2024.
As the world's largest water rescue organization, with a membership of over 627,000, the DLRG is a force to be reckoned with. Around half of its membership consists of children and youth up to the age of 18.
